The fulfilling of a dream

Global music with a climate friendly profile
Danish municipality to host what is probably the world's first totally CO2-neutral live music scene.

For foreign travellers the city of Hillerød north of Copenhagen, Denmark is probably best known for its renaissance style Frederiksborg Castle. However, in the future it might also be known as the hometown of a world music scene with a pronounced global climate profile.
Thus, on Thursday, August 18, 2011, the local major, Kirsten Jensen, inaugurate a solar panel system that will turn the local cultural centre Klaverfabrikken (The Piano Factory) into what will probably be the worlds first CO2-neutral live scene for rock, folk, jazz, world and electronic music.

The fulfilling of a dream

- We have aimed at this during the last three years. I am so happy, that our vision has finally come true, says Birgit Roemer, the daily manager of Klaverfabrikken.

After changing the scene spotlights into energy-saving LED-light in 2010, Klaverfabrikken has held several climate-concerts, sold climate-cakes and made climate performances. All profits were saved for buying solar panels. Together with private donations and support from local sponsors it then became possible to announce CO2-neutrale concerts.- The support has been overwhelming and also many voluntaries have been involved. However, without support from the local authorities and EU, it might have taken six years instead of three, Birgit Roemer states.

Local authorities support
Major of Hilleroed municipality, Kirsten Jensen, welcomes the climate friendly initiative.

- Klaverfabrikken's aim at becoming a CO2-neutrale live music scene fits well into the municipals climate strategy from 2010. It also goes very well together with local efforts to energy renovate public buildings, Kirsten Jensen says.

Earlier this year, the major even held her 50 years birthday at Klaverfabrikken, and solar panels was all she wanted for presents.

- I hope Klaverfabrikken will become a show window for sustainable energy, which will inspire other institutions and the citizens of Hillerød to adapt a more climate friendly behaviour, says Kirsten Jensen.
